It’s a good idea to think ahead before you enter into any new adventure. Marriage is a huge step. It’s smart to invest some time into thinking about what to expect and be ready to face it when it comes. Commitment and effort in life will always be rewarded.
Pre-marital preparation is unique to each couple. Some dimensions of marriage have already been learned by experience. Other areas are brand new. I invite couples to consider taking some premarital prep with me which allows them to be better ready for the rest of their lives.
1. Family of origin
How has my upbringing affected my partner and I? Though there is no guarantee of future performance the best predictor may be to take a look at the previous experiences to see how they have shaped us for the future.
Arguably it is the most important factor in a great marriage. This component requires 2 one hour sessions with homework in between.
Next to sexual intimacy finances is the biggest stress in a marriage. Included in this session will be discovery of spending/saving habits, budgeting, planning and crisis management. Okay, we can talk about intimacy and sexuality too if you want.
4. Family dynamics
Will you have children? When? Do you already have them? Are there other children to be thought of in the marriage? How about in-laws, exes, and others?
5. Stages of a marriage
Predictable seasons in a marriage journey. It’s helpful to be aware of them in order to be able to respond to them. Included here are discussions on anniversaries, milestones, family events, trips to Disney land etc.
6. After care
A 3 to 6 month check up to see “how things are going”.
7. Specific sessions
Tailored uniquely to your needs as a couple.
